Small but mighty, Maso Cantanghel is one Trento’s most exciting wine producers, crafting both white and red wine with remarkable character and elegance. His Pinot Nero and Sauvignon Blanc come from a single vineyard called Vigna Cantanghel situated at an altitude of 500 meters in the area of Civezzano on the foothills of Lagorai chain. Here young and tenacious Federico Simoni has found the perfect combination of clay and limestone soil, southern facing sun exposure and a microclimate that so well suits his style of winemaking. He currently cultivates 6 hectares and his winery is located in an ancient and historical Austrian fortress. Built between 1868 and 1876, the purpose of the fort was to guard the Eastern approach to the city of Trento. The fort was renovated just before World War I and has since been used as the cellar for Federico’s wine.
The Gewurztraminer “Vigna Caselle” is the name of the volcanic rock based soil vineyard in Cembra Valley situated at 450 m a.s.l. This Gewürztraminer grows on a unique and fascinating bank of the Avisio river. The microclimate of the area influenced by the cool currents of the Avisio valleys, the mineral constitution of the soil, the low yield per hectare and the harvest date are the key elements that offer the beauty and charm of Vigna Caselle Gewürztraminer. The soil is mainly composed of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits created by the action of glaciers and erosion of the Avisio river. The Pinot Grigio “Maso Papa” comes from the same vineyard located in San Lazzaro, in the Municipality of Trento The porphyric soil and the altitude give to the Pinot Grigio fragrances and minerality that reflect the soul of the land and of his work.
