CA’ DEL BAIO
Ca’ del Baio remains a small domaine with deep roots in Piemonte as the Grasso family has been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1880’s. Giulio and Luciana Grasso, fourth generation wine makers, are now running the family business with the help of their daughters Paola, Valentina and Federica. They maintain their traditional values with particular attention to the vines, especially during pruning, crucial for yield control and fruit quality. The use of herbicides and fertilizers in the vineyards was banned long ago and only natural yeasts are used for fermentation. Sulfur dioxide is used in very small quantities to preserve the wines’ intrinsic qualities.
In March of 2016 Giulio was recognized recently as “Viticoltore dell’anno” or Winemaker of the Year by Italy’s famed Gambero Rosso, an incredible achievement for this humble man. Grasso is an extremely passionate farmer, a man who lives by the rhythms of nature in perfect symbiosis with his vineyards. Although he produces both white and red wines, it his Barbaresco wines from Pora, the famous Asili and Vallegrande crus that best express his winemaking style and his land. Their production is divided, half is Nebbiolo (Barbaresco, plus Langhe Nebbiolo) and the other half divided among Dolcetto, Barbera, luscious Langhe whites from Chardonnay and Moscato. The entire range has a sense of verve, freshness, and vitality that can’t fail to impress the taster.
